I love history, not so much the big events as the little elements of daily life. There's something intriguing in learning the historical context that gave rise to something like the child's rhyme "Ring Around the Rosie," which I'd learned was based on the bubonic plague of the Elizabethan era. (Apparently, I was
mistaken.) I recently came across
this, which explains the origins of the rhyme, "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary." Icky, but interesting.
